Hybrid Assistive Limb (HAL)
HAL for Medical Use (Lower Limb Type) is the world’s first robotic treatment device that allows a patient to walk in a supported environment using their own internal signals to help improve walking upon the completion of the HAL treatment program. HAL fits over a person’s waist and legs and is used in combination with a Body Weight Support system.
While working with a trained medical professional (physician, physical therapist, etc.) HAL is programmed to detect faint bio-electric signals on the surface of the skin, which reflects the intention to “move.” Using these signals, HAL allows the wearer to perform the desired movements with their voluntary commands. The physical therapist can see these signals and adjust settings on the robot suit to amplify weak signals and focus on desired signals. Active use of these neural pathways for voluntary movement with feedback to the brain leads to an improved ability for the wearer to walk on their own. This is what makes HAL unique from other technology currently offered in medicine, such as exoskeletons.
HAL is intended for individuals with a spinal cord injury at levels C4 to L5 (ASIA C, ASIA D) and T11 to L5 (ASIA A with Zones of Partial Preservation, ASIA B), who have some motor function of the hip and knee.
