Programs

We're committed to helping residents with physical disabilities, but we believe we can make an even greater impact by working with the right community partners to offer more programs and services.

That's why we extend our reach by supporting community health initiatives and local organizations that work to improve the care and quality of life for people with physical disabilities. Our recent support included funding for prevention, education outreach and research programs offered by Jacksonville's non-profit hospitals. Plus we're engaged with our partners to develop new programs for our community.

Brain Injury Coalition for Kids

Together with Shands Jacksonville, we're developing an unparalleled database to gather data on the treatment and outcomes of children's traumatic injuries. This pool of information will help physicians and therapists enhance their knowledge of post-injury issues, design more effective treatments and formulate strategies and programs to prevent acute injuries. Once completed, the database will be the only long-term, ongoing pediatric trauma database of its kind in the U.S.

Balance For Life

A Joint initiative between Brooks Rehabilitation and United Way of Northeast Florida, this community benefit falls prevention initiative is unlike anything currently being offered. It targets seniors over 65 years of age who live in Duval County in Health Zone Two*. Program initiatives include a fall risk assessment by a Brooks' physical therapist, fall prevention education, a link to an intervention to improve balance and mobility and follow up. Assessments will take place at area senior centers, churches, and other places where active seniors congregate. The program will also assess seniors' risk of falling while being discharged from Baptist or Shands and will link them to services based on the results of their screening.  The Balance for Life Program has recently had articles posted in Prime Time, a special section of the Florida Times Union and the Mandarin Sun.

School Re-entry

Brooks funds a Duval County Hospital/Homebound teacher and classroom space to help maximize a child's successful transition back to school following a disabling illness or injury by minimizing the lost academic learning that occurs while the student receives treatment

Support Groups

Brooks runs and aids a variety of support groups to assist current and former patients as they strive to regain their ability to lead successful, independent lives. We currently maintain relationships with the ALS Support Group, Gateway Stroke Club, Spinal Chord Support Group of Jacksonville, Peripheral Neuropathy Support Group, and the Jacksonville Brain Injury Support Group, in addition to Brooks Rehabilitation Hospital's Inpatient Support Groups.
