Six of Brooks Rehabilitation outpatient sites will soon be participating in a clinical trial aimed at examining the treatment of shoulder pain.
On January 12, fourteen physical therapists (listed below) participated in the evidence based examination and intervention techniques that will be used in the clinical trial. Dr. Chuck Thigpen, PT, PhD, ATC, Dr. Lori Michener PT, PhD, ATC and Dr. Angela Tate, PT, Ph D were the instructors for this one day course. The therapists were taught the theory, techniques, and issues surrounding the implementation of this clinical trial. Evidence based examination and intervention techniques were described and then practiced through hands on laboratory sessions. Additionally, clinical research issues such as ethics of randomization, patient compliance, and determination of best practice guidelines was discussed. The course was held at the University of North Florida's Physical Therapy Program and lasted from 7:30 to 5:00pm. CEUS were provided and all therapists will be assisting in this research protocol.
The study is titled Randomized Clinical Trials of Rehabilitation for Subacromial Impingement and plans to begin enrolling patients in early February. The purpose of this randomized clinical trial is to examine the short and long term effectiveness of a combination of manual therapy and therapeutic exercise as compared to therapeutic exercise only.
