There's always something exciting going on at the Brooks Center. Here we provide you with a spotlight on an investigator, staff member or new trial.
Success is Sweet for One Project!
Developing a Computerized Adaptive Measure of Functional Cognition for Stroke has enrolled over 114 patients since May of 2007. The project had a goal of enrolling 124 patients and according to project coordinator, Kristine Garretson, they may exceed this goal by August. The study has officially enrolled 44 patients that were in the acute phase (three weeks post stroke) and 70 in the chronic phase (between three months post and one year post stroke).
This study is designed to develop a computer adaptive way to measure cognitive skills of acute and chronic stroke patients. The hierarchy of everyday thinking skills includes skills such as: language, reading and writing, emotional function, social use of language, numerical/calculations and limb praxis. The team will be using the survey results of patients, caregivers and patients to design this tool. The study was funded by GlaxoSmithKline.
Brooks has been one of the collection sites for this study in conjunction with University of Florida, UF and Shands Jacksonville. The Brooks team which includes Julianne Agonis (Research Assistant), Whitney Jenkins (Research Assistant), Kristine Garretson (Research Coordinator), Flo Singletary (Clinical Coordinator of the Brooks Center) has been led by Dr. Craig Velozo,(Principal Investigator) from the University of Florida's Department of Occupational Therapy, and Dr. Pam Duncan (Co-Principal Investigator), from Duke University's Department of Physical Therapy. They should all be proud of meeting their goals! For more information on the study or to enroll in this study, please contact Kristine Garretson at (904) 306-8985.
